The Federal Government has finalised plans to mandate fuel retailers to establish Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) pumps at filling stations nationwide.
Consequently, the government has stated that prospective retail license applicants will now be required to include a CNG facility at their filling stations before receiving final approval.
The administration has instructed oil marketers to commence the process of installing Compressed Natural Gas points at their filling stations to enhance consumer accessibility.
This directive was conveyed by Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, during a meeting with key oil marketing companies on Tuesday in Abuja.
The discussion aimed to address the persistent scarcity of petroleum products in the country and propose alternative solutions.
Ahmed disclosed that a significant part of their conversation revolved around the Federal Government’s Compressed Natural Gas initiative.
He urged the major marketers to explore the availability of CNG at their petrol stations, as President Bola Tinubu has mandated that all government vehicles purchased henceforth must be CNG-powered.
He emphasised that new applications for retail licenses would no longer be approved without CNG points.
Describing the Federal Government’s push to encourage the use of CNG as an alternative to petrol as a “revolution,” Ahmed stated that the government was determined to reduce the economic burden posed by petrol.
