Diabetes summary – Type 1 and Type 2 & Natural ways to Control Blood Sugar


The human body functions healthy when all the tissues and systems work in unison and sustain the health and well-being of the body. If there occurs a corruption in any system of the body, the whole of the body suffers. Any suffering may also increase the vulnerability of the body to a host of diseases. One of such disease that have a very broad effect on the health and well-being of the human body is diabetes.

Diabetes and its types

Diabetes is an ailment in which the body is unable to utilize blood sugars and is unable to make this energy available to the cells. When we eat food, the nutrients present in the food are digested and refined before they enter into the bloodstream. When they are in the bloodstream, these nutrients are taken into the cells where they provide energy to the cells for cell functions.
There is one hormone that makes it possible for the blood sugars to absorb easily into the cells. This hormone – insulin – is synthesized by the pancreas and released into the bloodstream and it controls the levels of blood sugars.

In diabetes, the pancreas is no more able to synthesize insulin. Resultantly, blood sugar levels start increasing. Excess of blood sugars in the body for longer periods can damage blood vessels and this multiplies the risk of heart attack, heart stroke, kidney failure, nerve problems and loss of vision.

Diabetes has two main types which are described below:

Type-1 Diabetes
In type-1 diabetes(1), the body fails to produce any insulin thus it is unable to process blood sugars. The major causes of type-1 diabetes include immune dysfunction in which the body’s immune system starts destroying insulin-producing healthy cells. Alternately, it may be caused by genetics or because of any foreign virus or environmental conditions.

The patients of this type of diabetes are usually children and young adults. Their bodies fail to make insulin at all. That is why type-1 diabetes is also known as juvenile diabetes. These patients have to rely on daily insulin shots to sustain their blood sugar levels.
The symptoms of this type of diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, bedwetting in children who previously didn’t wet the bed during the night, extreme hunger, unintended weight loss, fatigue, and weakness. If any of these signs are recurrent in your child, consult a doctor.

Type-2 Diabetes

In Type-2 diabetes(2), either the body resists the effects of insulin or is unable to synthesize sufficient amounts of it. This condition leads to an accumulation of sugars in the blood and can be fatal in certain extreme conditions.
Type-2 diabetes is generally considered as an adult disorder with people above 45 at a greater risk of contracting this ailment. But more and more children are being diagnosed with type-2 diabetes lately probably due to an increase in childhood obesity.

There is no cure for type-2 diabetes. Only by losing weight, eating healthy and exercising can one overcome this disease.
Treatment for Diabetes or insulin therapy is also available and can be performed on the
recommendation of a doctor.
The symptoms of type-2 diabetes are almost the same as type-1 diabetes and include increased thirst, frequent urination, increased hunger, unintended weight loss, fatigues and blurry vision. If these symptoms persist, consult a doctor.

Natural ways to Control Blood Sugar

High blood sugars are because of the failure of the cells to consume the sugars that are present in the body. There are many causes of high blood sugars. It can occur because your food intake is way too much than is required by your body. Ultimately, the excess sugars would not be taken in by the cells and it would remain in the blood. Alternately, blood sugar level can increase because of the failure of the body to synthesize insulin – the hormone which makes the sugar available to the cells.
It is but natural that a healthy and active lifestyle will help in naturally controlling the blood sugar levels. Following are some of the natural ways to control the blood sugars(3):
1. Lose your weight:

Losing weight improves the overall functioning of all the systems of the body. Weight reduction optimizes hormone synthesis and increases metabolism. Improved metabolism digests the food better and burns calories thereby no sugar accumulates in the blood. Even if the pancreas releases smaller amounts of insulin, because of the improved body functions that could be enough to control blood sugar levels.

2. Make exercise a part of your daily routine:
Regular exercise helps to reduce weight as well as improve insulin sensitivity. Improved insulin sensitivity implies that the amount of energy that is made available to the cells is used efficiently and effectively. Regular exercise also maintains lower levels of fat in the body.
3. Eat fewer carbohydrates:
Eat fewer carbohydrates or eat healthy Carbs. Carbohydrates are broken down into sugars once they reach the stomach and intestines. These sugars are released into the bloodstream to be absorbed into the cells. Hence, the less intake of “Bad Carbs, the lesser sugars would be present in your blood.
4. Psyllium Husk:
Psyllium husk works well for controlling blood sugar levels. It is a fibre that delays the digestion of carbohydrates in the stomach thereby the sugar release in the bloodstream is slowed down.
Researchers have found that 10g of psyllium husk twice a day is one of the best natural remedies to control blood sugars.
5. Stay hydrated:
Staying hydrated throughout the day helps in controlling the blood sugar levels. Water maintains the appropriate blood thinning. Even excess sugars are also flushed out of the kidneys with excess water.


Diabetes can either be genetic or may be caused by having a sedentary lifestyle. The disease is chronic and if left untreated it increases the risk of permanent damage to other organs such as kidneys and heart. Therefore, it must be paid attention to from the beginning. The natural remedies to manage or possibly reverse this disease include having a healthy lifestyle.
